Craft Show Survival Kit :: Part II - The Box

Last week, we covered Part I of The Craft Show Survival Kit: The Bag.  Today, we will move onto some of The Bag’s most important contents: The Box. I consider “The Box” my crafter’s tool kit, complete with all the knick knacks that I need to put together my booth and a few extras to help throughout the day.

Now, I like to have everything in it's place for quick, easy access during even the busiest parts of the show; so, my box has two tiers:  one for setup and display items, the other for my own supplies.

The perfect contents of your Box may differ than those listed here.  This is just a start to get you thinking about what you might need.  Hopefully, you will see a few “ah-ha!” items here that you hadn’t considered, and maybe you can school us on a few nifty tools that were missed.

Having a game plan always helps me to rest easy before a show. You can't control the weather, the traffic, or the sales, but you can make sure you are ready for whatever the event is going to throw at you. Being organized and prepared is a sure-fire recipe for taking anyone from disappointing to confident, even if you are a slug.

Craft Show Survival Kit :: Part I - The Bag

One of the things I found most stressful about prepping for my very first few shows (several years ago) was the worry that I might forget something important. It would, of course, be something I could not live without. The whole show would fall apart and I would crawl home, a disappointing slug. Hopefully, your mind is not as overactive and dramatic as mine is, but you get the point.

I have learned two very important lessons since my first sleepless night before the big event.
  • You cannot put a value on the peace-of-mind you get arriving at a show with everything you need and feeling completely prepared for the day.
  • You are only human and you will forget things. The good news is: you can forget a LOT of things before you actually turn into a disappointing slug.

As a crafter, you are probably constantly trying to streamline and improve the production process. It is good sense to streamline whatever you can, and why not do that for your craft show prep as well?

Cha-Cha-Changes

I would like to take a moment today to discuss a couple of new features on the site, as well as discuss the many tools already built into DFW Craft Shows geared at making the site easy to use, navigate, and search. I realize that there is a lot of information here, and our database is growing daily. DFW Craft Shows provides several methods to help you parse through information, searching by show type, location, date, and more. Below I will cover some of these valuable tools, all in order of how they appear on the site, top to bottom.

The Nav Bar
The navigation bar is located across the top of the website. You have probably noticed it change a few times in the past couple of months, and it is changing again. I have now included a section for our Weekend Guides, as well as a section for our upcoming articles. Articles? Yes, starting this afternoon DFW Craft Shows will begin to offer articles for Event Coordinators, Vendors, and Shoppers. I created this page so you can find and review all of our articles in one convenient location.

The Search Box
Pretty straight forward, but a powerful tool not to be over looked. The search box is located towards the top of the left sidebar. Here you can enter keywords to find particular shows. I mainly use this feature myself to find information on specific shows I remember posting, or giveaways from specific vendors etc..

Follow Via Email
Love the site but always forget to check in? You can subscribe to our posts through this RSS feed. Now, every time something new is listed on DFW Craft Shows, you will receive an email about it. This is the closest thing to a newsletter that we currently have.

Twitter and Facebook
An alternative way to keep up to day on blog posts is to "follow" or "like" our Twitter and/or Facebook pages. Whenever we have new show information, it will be posted here as well. We also remind our FB / Twitter followers of impending application deadlines, current giveaways, and more!

Upcoming Show
Just a quick mention of our Submit Show page, which allows you to submit any show information that you may have into our system for publication on DFW Craft Shows. This is the fastest way to get a show listed here, but there may still be a delay as each show submission is reviewed and manually entered on the website to insure relevance.

Browse by Subject
This is a great tool to browse our posts by labels. Each show post is categorized by location, month, and type, which you can view at the bottom of the post right before the comments. These labels are clickable here, or can be accessed on the left sidebar. This is a great way to look at show listings by location, but it is also a great way to filter shows by type. Shows that that are handmade-only are indicated by the "handmade" tag. You can also select a month to see all shows currently listed for that month. This information is easily viewable on our calendar page as well.

That's it for today! I hope you learned some new tools here that help you to navigate the site even faster and more efficiently than before!

Happy Crafting!

Tania

OutNAbout - Weekend in Review 4/15 - 4/17

Once the wind and hail departed, we were left with an absolutely beautiful end to the week. I couldn't resist getting out into the world and to check out what was going on in the Arts & Crafts scene.

Art In The Square

From Friday till Sunday, artists gather together in Southlake to showcase their work to the world. This year's show was a huge turnout, offering everything from jewelry to paintings, sculptures, photography and more.

We had a wonderful timing visiting with the artists at this show and admiring the variety of gorgeous work on display. In this amazing group, there are two sculptures I visit every year at this event, Sumati & Michael Colpitts. Their amazing work, both suitable for indoors and out, is almost too beautiful to capture in words.

Even this picture doesn't do them justice. The detail and workmanship in each completely unique piece is unbelievable. I have been dreaming about one of their Caped Rabbits for years. I finally made the leap, and you can see a little photo-shoot with my fantastic new friend here.

Another incredibly talented artist, Ping Irvin, was also at Art in the Square. Her paintings are an amazing combination of the organic and geometric, with an extremely detailed eye for color theory and dimension.

Ping had this original at the show and it was stunning. I almost didn't post it here, because I want it. There, that's the truth. And this painting is only the tip of her vast collection.

That closes another great year of Art In The Square. Every year I come away in awe, absolutely inspired to come home and get to work. Where did you go this weekend and what did you see/purchase that inspired you?
